Outsourcing: Improving Core Competencies

Outsourcing has become an increasingly popular method to assist businesses to thrive in the 21st century. While each business is unique and requires individualisation for their outsourcing, the ultimate purpose for any business to utilise outsourcing is so that it can improve. The purest way for a business to improve is through focusing on its core competency.

The idea of core competency is a relatively new management theory originally devised in a 1990 Harvard Business Review article. In “The Core Competence of the Corporation”, C.K. Prahalad and Gary Hamel review three conditions a business activity must meet in order to be a core competency:

  1. The activity must provide superior value or benefits to the consumer.
  2. It should be difficult for a competitor to replicate or imitate it.
  3. It should be rare

Core competencies which set businesses above the rest vary across industries. A fantastic recent example is Nike. Their range of elite running shoes, specifically carbon fibre plated racing shoes, were so rare and above the rest of the pack that they were banned/restricted by World Athletics. All other brands were simply unable to compete at the time.

Nike’s core competencies are heavily influenced by the work they outsource. Their outsourced manufacturing enables them to produce the most elite racing shoes in the world for the same price as competitors – competitors who can no longer compete.

If you look at the entire fashion industry, nearly all companies have their goods produced in Southeast Asia, and majority outsource this work (as opposed to owning the factory exclusively). The mere fact a material goods company has survived more than 5 years, whether it be Nike, RM Williams, Gucci or Quicksilver, means it has had core competencies. They have done something to stand out, and this was once outsourcing. Outsourcing in that industry has changed from a core competency to a pre-requisite to survival.
